Our junior school has 178 pupils and is on the outskirts of Durham city. Children mostly come from the village of Bowburn or surrounding villages, such as Coxhoe and Parkhill.

The school is divided into two departments – Upper and Lower School. Lower School has  4 classes, 2 in Year 3 and 2 in Year 4. Teachers work in teams to plan lessons.  In Upper School, there are 2 Year 5  and 2 Year 6 classes.

All pupils are encouraged to take responsibility in different areas of school life. They can apply for positions on the school council. Year 6 pupils can act as ‘Playground Friends’ to help younger pupils, and take responsibility for assemblies, door duty and other useful tasks. We also have mediators who help others to sort out playground disputes.

Our school is a happy school. Children are proud to wear our smart, colourful uniform. We have always had strong links with partner schools in France, Finland, Germany, Spain and India. For this we have received European and International Accreditation.

We aim high and give opportunities for participation in a whole range of artistic and sporting activities, with clubs taking place every night after school, run by willing teachers and Higher Level Teaching Assistants.

At Bowburn, we are privileged to have a team of helpers, students, parents, grand-parents, governors and friends, who come in to support teachers in classrooms. This helps us to deliver a quality education to all our pupils. The children all believe that Bowburn Juniors is ‘Simply the Best’. We aim to live up to our logo as ‘The quality school that cares'
